Vancouver based artist Michelle Allard created her installation Materialscape during a 1 month residency at KW|AG in January. With the help of a small army of community volunteers, Michelle rolled 30,000 pieces of white office paper then, using cardboard boxes, created an intriguing and touch inducing artwork in the middle of the Eastman Gallery, painstakingly placing each roll.
It took 3 minutes for Registrar Cindy Wayvon and her installation crew of 5 to disassemble Materialscape. Of course, some fun was had first, the freed paper rolls being used to bury Cindy and shower the group. Getting down to business, various methods were then tried to flatten the paper, the most effective being a grape stomping style approach. The sound of that much paper being balled, squashed and squished was truly amazing. It scraped, crunched and rustled all at once, echoing through the Eastman Gallery and making conversation at normal levels impossible.
