Block Party Brings Neighbourhood Together

By Emily Gove, KW|AG & KPL Community Programmer

More than 400 friends and neighbours of all ages came out Saturday afternoon to rock the block with us and the Kitchener Public Library! Visitors filled Civic Square Park between the Centre In The Square and KPL’s Main branch to participate in family yoga with Janine Kellar Ng of Blue Skies Yoga & Eco Store, an interactive demonstration by Fung Loy Kok™ Taoist Tai Chi™ Kitchener-Waterloo and music by the awesome Zoe Janzen (whose “No Diggity” on ukulele is a personal highlight) and the “sassy, classy and sweet” voices of the AcaBellas.

Partygoers were also invited to design a streetlight banner for the Olde Berlin Town Neighbourhood Association, make a custom bookmark with Victoria Park Neighbourhood Association, participate in impromptu music lessons with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, add to an interactive mural by Kitchener’s 2012 artist-in-residence Jefferson Campbell-Cooper, (which will find its home in the Downtown Community Centre), and were even able to make beautiful potted plants to take home, courtesy of the Kitchener Horticultural Society and Kitchener Master Gardeners—not to mention make customized buttons with KW|AG, magnetic poetry (on a giant fridge!) with KPL, and leave their mark with spray paint, paint markers and collage on our graffiti wall (still up behind the playground by-the-way).  Visitors were also invited on guided walks around the neighbourhood, by local experts Karen Buschert of the Kitchener-Waterloo Field Naturalists, rych mills of the Waterloo Historical Society, and Elaine Baldwin of Kitchener Horticultural Society and Kitchener Master Gardeners.

On behalf of KPL & KW|AG,  a tremendous thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible: our amazing and dedicated KPL & KW|AG staff, event volunteers Ben, Emilie, Follusho, Katlin, Krista, Lori, Nyall, Peter, Rachel and Roula, and all of the participating organizations and individuals who donated their time and skill:
